The Original Nouveau Coureur Des Bois
This is my all-time favorite of
all my personal knives. I made it in the mid-nineties and have been using it
ever since. It was cut with a hack saw, ground by hand using my 7 inch angle
grinder, hardened by heating in hot coals in my wood furnace and multi-dipped in
old crankcase oil to allow the heat still in the back to temper the steel a bit,
then polished by hand. (It turned out to be a bit soft - perhaps in the low 50's
RC hardness - but is still hard enough to give good service. It sports a 9 3/4 inch
by 2 1/2 inch blade cut from a damaged sawmill circular gang saw blade. The solid tang is
electrically welded recycled food-grade stainless steel, as is the
pommel plate. The back of the blade, just back of the point sports a
branch cutter which is ground at a higher angle. The scales are of
solid wood cut from a dead Lilac bush, stabilized by soaking in pure
melted beeswax. Since I have this knife, I take it anytime I go into the bush
camping, canoeing, hunting, whatever. I also take it sailing and use it when
the time comes to butcher the domestic animals I raise for food. I
have gutted and skinned deer, rabbits, chickens (yes I skin them)
and hogs with it. With it, I have blazed trails for hours in dense
bush, cut trees as big as eight inches across using nothing but the
"Nouveau Courreur". It's turned out to be an absolutely excellent multi-purpose tool.
By the way, for those who might wonder, I weighted this knife and case and here's the results. The knife weights
661 grams (that's 1.46 lbs or 1 lb 7.3 oz). The case weights in at 125.5 grams (.26 lbs or 4.2 oz), so total
weight is 786.5 grams (1.73 lbs or 1 lb 11.74 oz).
